100% hand-painted — not a print, not a poster.

The Story and Setting of Titus

Painted around 1657 during a period of immense personal struggle and financial recovery for the Dutch master, this magnificent portrait represents Rembrandt's only surviving child, Titus van Rijn, at approximately sixteen years of age. Titus is captured wearing an elaborate sixteenth-century Venetian costume adorned with a gold earring and an intricate chain, topped by a fantastic red beret from which voluminous, warm curls spill out. Rembrandt famously maintained an extensive studio collection of historical costumes, theatrical clothing, and exotic props, which he used to 'dress up' his sitters. By deliberately subverting conventional portraiture norms of the Dutch Golden Age, Rembrandt elevated his son's likeness beyond a simple family record, transforming the image into a profound exploration bordering on fantasy, theater, and timeless human emotion.

Brushwork, Surface, and Light

The artwork stands as an extraordinary masterclass in classical chiaroscuro, utilizing a dramatic tonal contrast between deep, velvety shadows and focused areas of brilliant illumination. The light originates strongly from the left side of the composition, bathing the left profile of Titus's face in an intimate glow while casting the right side into profound, mysterious shadow. Our master artists recreate Rembrandt's late-career painting technique by building up a dense, opaque layer of lead-free white and earth pigments to establish a physical textured brushstrokes foundation, particularly on the forehead, nose, and the edge of the collar. This deliberate impasto is subsequently treated with thin, transparent layers of colored glaze, allowing underlying levels to filter through and create an illusion of translucent skin. A quick, single swipe of thick paint defines the structure of the right shoulder, showing a restricted yet powerful color palette dominated by rich raw umbers, deep siennas, and striking highlights of warm Venetian red.

The Story Behind the Painting

Titus van Rijn, born in 1641, was the fourth and ultimately the sole surviving child of Rembrandt and his beloved first wife, Saskia van Uylenburgh, who tragically passed away before the boy's first birthday. Throughout his tumultuous upbringing, Titus remained a constant source of inspiration, comfort, and professional support for his father, particularly after Rembrandt declared bankruptcy and lost his grand home on Amsterdam's Jodenbreestraat. In 1660, Titus along with Rembrandt's mistress, Hendrikje Stoffels, officially established an independent art dealership, legally employing Rembrandt to protect the aging master from aggressive creditors and allow him to paint unhindered. This deeply emotional bond between father and son is immortalized through Titus's captivating gaze and serious demeanor, reflecting both a tender parental affection and a deep sense of shared resilience during their hardest historical chapters.

Designed for Beautiful Rooms

To fully honor the dramatic lighting and rich earthy tones of this museum quality wall art, position the canvas in an area with directed accent lighting or subtle natural side-light, which dramatically accentuates the raised paint textures and impasto ridges. It serves beautifully as a large canvas for living room spaces when hung above a mantelpiece or flanked by traditional wall sconces. For modern interiors, pair this historic reproduction with neutral wall tones like charcoal gray, soft cream, or deep olive to let the vibrant crimson accents of Titus's beret stand out. It functions beautifully as a sophisticated conversational anchor when placed at eye level in an office or a formal reception room, pairing elegantly with dark walnut furniture, brass accents, and velvet upholstery.
